Prof. Dr. Peter Sloterdijk holds the Max Schmidheiny Lecture at the 42nd St. Gallen Symposium on 4 May 2012

On 4 May 2012, Prof. Dr. Peter Sloterdijk, the German philosopher and public intellectual, gives the Max Schmidheiny Lecture at the 42nd St. Gallen Symposium, to be held at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. Closing the symposium’s keynote programme, Peter Sloterdijk will speak on immunity, risk awareness and a culture of failure.

The Max Schmidheiny Lecture by Prof. Dr. Peter Sloterdijk will close this year’s St. Gallen Symposium on a very special note. Peter Sloterdijk will reflect on the symposium’s topic of “Facing Risk” from his particular viewpoint as a philosopher, speaking on the relationship between immunity, risk awareness and a culture of failure. His radical analyses on modern societies, their driving forces and the future role of the individual have made Peter Sloterdijk arguably the most prominent German philosopher of his generation and one of Europe’s foremost public intellectuals.

The Max Schmidheiny Lecture

The Max Schmidheiny Lecture by Peter Sloterdijk has been made possible by the Max Schmidheiny Foundation which in so doing is furthering a long tradition of distinguished global leaders and public intellectuals addressing the St. Gallen Symposium on fundamental issues of freedom and responsibility. Following the inaugural Max Schmidheiny Lecture by Professor Niall Ferguson on the occasion of the Symposium’s 40th anniversary in 2010 and the address by Ayaan Hirsi Ali in 2011, this year’s lecture by Peter Sloterdijk is continuing the series of critical reflections on the foundations and the prospects of free societies. In particular, the lectures are meant as a prominent platform for dialogue between academia and business on the future of a liberal order in a time when its classical premises are increasingly called into question and its achievements are all too easily taken for granted.
